Title: The Runagates Club
Author: John Buchan (1st Baron Tweedsmuir)
Year of Publication: 1928 (20th century)
Type: Short Story
Genre: Adventure/Thriller, Humour
Plot Summary: In ‘The Frying-pan and the Fire’, a 1920s Border laird, the Duke of Burminster, tries to prove to a friend that – despite the lack of tree cover – it is still possible to emulate the reivers of old and travel the land undetected. Thrills and spills follow as the ‘fugitive’ finds himself trapped in a kurhaus for nervous invalids, escapes, and masquerades as the ring master of a provincial circus. Evading police, drunken low-lifes and a vengeful psychiatrist, Burminster must survive by his wits before finally managing to empathise with a mother duck. Several amusing cameo roles, including Mr McGowan, the radical proprietor of ‘McGowan’s Marvellous Multitudinous Menagerie’. Mostly fictional locations, but clearly in and around Tweedsdale.
Publisher: House of Stratus
ISBN: 1842327879
