Title: The Mountain Bard

Author: James Hogg (The Ettrick Shepherd)

Year of Publication: 1807 (19th century)

Type: Poetry

Genre: Romance, Supernatural, Traditional,

Plot Summary: Hogg recounts some of the traditional tales which he learned at his mother's knee. The stories are truer to their oral roots than those Hogg's mother told to Sir Walter Scott (q.v.) which eventually appeared in Scott's Border Minstrelsy. The love stories are often of young lovers thwarted by family rivalries. The tales of adventure and the supernatural are far more specific as to time and place.
