Plot Summary: Roman Catholic monks Abbey of Kennaquhair (Melrose) feel threatened by the strengthening Reformation (16th century). Edward and Halbert Glendinning, Scots and brothers, love Mary Avenel, an orphan with whom they weres raised but who has been cheated out of her inheritance by a Border bandit. Halbert duels with an annoying English knight, thinks he has killed him, and flees. The knight is miraculously restored by a supernatural ‘White Lady’. Halbert’s gallant behaviour wins him the favour of the Earl of Murray and he is allowed to marry Mary. Edward, disappointed, becomes a monk. Edward’s story is tangentially continued in The Abbot (q.v.).
