Title: The Maid of Neidpath

Author: Walter Scott

Type: Ballad

Genre: Historical Poem

Plot Summary: The mortally love-sick heroine of Scott’s ballad came from near Peebles, where Neidpath Castle has stood since the 14th century. Thomas Campbell also wrote a ballad with the same title. The 4th Duke of Queensbury (1725–1810), the notorious ‘rake of Piccadilly’ known also as ‘Old Q’ or ‘Degenerate Douglas’ was responsible for felling the estate’s venerable trees ‘Leaving an ancient Dome, and Towers like these,/Beggared and outraged!’, much to the disgust of William Wordsworth (sonnet, 1803).
