Title: The Life and Miracles of St Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne
Author: Bede (The Venerable Bede)
Year of Publication: 721 (8th century)
Type: Non-fiction
Genre: Traditional
Plot Summary: A monastery was founded at Coldingham in AD 655 by St Ebbe. During his visits here, Ebbe’s friend St Cuthbert frequently spent nights roaming the shore – a habit which excited the curiosity of one of the monks. This brother secretly followed the saint and saw him enter the cold seas up to his neck. After many hours, St Cuthbert returned to the land and prayed. According to St Bede: ‘... immediately there followed in his footsteps two little sea animals [otters or seals], humbly stretching themselves on the earth; and, licking his feet, they rolled upon them, wiping them with their skins and warming them with their breath. After this service had been fulfilled and his blessing had been received they departed to their haunts in the waves of the sea’. There are still cold seas, otters and seals near Coldingham, but no known saints.
