Plot Summary: The main character is the misunderstood misanthrope Sir Edward Manley (‘Elshie of the Mucklestanes’), modelled on ‘Bowed Davie Ritchie’ whom the author visited in 1797. Ritchie lived in a cottage near Kirkton (4 miles south-west of Peebles), on which site a later cottage was erected in 1802, featuring a dwarf-sized door. Ritchie is buried at nearby Manor Kirk.
