Title: The Antiquary

Author: Walter Scott

Year of Publication: 1816 (19th century)

Genre:

Plot Summary: Although not set in the Borders, the novel contains a note concerning one Rutherford of Bowland (near Buckholm Tower and Galashiels). Rutherford faced prosecution for non-payment of rents, but was convinced his late father had legally resolved the problem in the past. Unfortunately, the paperwork was missing and a court case loomed. Rutherford’s father’s ghost appeared to him and told him where and how to obtain the documents. Scott weighs supernatural and psychological explanations for this ‘true’ story.

In a separate long note, Scott acknowledges how the story of the false alarm at Fairport was modelled on the accidental mobilisation of the Border volunteers and militias in 1804. There follow some interesting and amusing details. See also A. and J. Lang (1914) Highways and Byways in the Border.
