Title: St Ronan's Well

Author: Walter Scott

Year of Publication: 1823 (19th century)

Type: Novel

Genre: Satire, Social Observation

Plot Summary: Story which – unusually for Scott – satirised contemporary fashionable society in the spa town of St Ronan’s (based on Innerleithen). The Cross Keys Hotel in Peebles (in Scott’s period called the Yett Inn) is a possible model for Cleikum Inn, and its landlady, Marion Ritchie, a model for Meg Dodds. The adjacent Tontine Hotel may have suggested Meg;s hated ‘Tomteen’.
