Title: Sir Quixote of the Moors

Author: John Buchan (1st Baron Tweedsmuir)

Year of Publication: 1895 (19th century)

Type: Novel

Genre: Adventure/Thriller, Historical Fiction, Romance,

Plot Summary: An account of a romantic episode in the life of Jean, the Sieur de Rohaine – a worldly and experienced French adventurer at large in 17th century Scotland. Having witnessed Royalist troops butchering suspected Covenanters, he follows the example of ‘godly’ refugees and escapes to the safety of the hills around Eskdalemuir and the head of Ettrick Water. Whilst staying at the (fictional) Manse of Lindean, he falls in love but honour forbids he should win a woman he has pledged to protect for another. Buchan’s first novel has some fine writing – typically adept pacing and descriptive attention to landscape and weather – but the dialogue is occasionally awkward.
