Title: Selkirk Survivor

Author: Anonymous

Genre: Traditional

Plot Summary: Of 80 men who left Selkirk to fight at the Battle of Flodden, only 1 survived. This was Walter Brydon, a town clerk, who returned bearing an English banner which he flung down in the town square. This flag is now kept in Selkirk's museum and Brydon's return is commemorated by a statue, and in an annual flag-waving and flag-weaving ceremony ('casting the colours') by the mercat cross.
