Title: Raid of the Redeswire
Author:
Genre: Traditional
Plot Summary: The annual meeting of the Scottish and English Wardens of the Middle March was held on the moor at Redeswire by Carter Bar in July 1575. The Scottish official, William Kerr of Ferniehirst, demanded the arrest of an English thief. Sir John Forster, the English official, prevaricated. A full and frank exchange of views followed, covering professional competence, personal virtue and family traits, followed by an unexpected attack by Forster's supporters. The Scottish contingent was saved by the late arrival of a party of Jedburgh horsemen who rode into the melee shouting 'Jetharts here!' and then chopped 24 of the English to bits. This unusual resolution of a diplomatic problem was later glossed over by the respective governments, hence its description as an 'accident'. The incident is fondly remembered in Jedburgh.
