Title: Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border
Author: Walter Scott
Year of Publication: 1802 (19th century)
Type: Ballad
Genre: Historical Poem
Plot Summary: Title often abbreviated to Border Minstrelsy. A 3-volume collection appearing in its 5th and final edition in 1812 and containing 96 ballads. W.S. had begun collecting Border ballads (q.v.) on ‘raids’ into Liddesdale and the Ettrick Forest from 1792 onwards, enlisting the help of other collectors including George Ellis, Robert Jamieson, John Leyden, Bishop Percy and Robert Surtees. Whilst claiming faithfulness to the spirit of the originals, he was unabashed about ‘improving’ and rewriting verses he considered inferior, and he added his own and other people’s modern ‘imitations’ in Vol. II.
