Title: Marmion: a Tale of Flodden Field

Author: Walter Scott

Year of Publication: 1808 (19th century)

Type: Poetry

Genre: Adventure/Thriller, Historical Poem, Romance,

Plot Summary: Complicated fictional events surrounding fictional participants in the Battle of Flodden (1513). Marmion is an English knight and a cad, and will stop at nothing to win the hand of Lady Clare. However, Lady Clare’s true love triumphs in the end, and Marmion is killed in battle. Contains 2 famous songs: ‘Lochinvar’ and ‘Where shall the lover rest’.

Scott introduces each of the cantos of Marmion with a poem in the form of a letter written from his home Ashiestiel. George Ellis noted that this interweaving of the poet with the poem, makes Scott the minstrel of Marmion.
