Title: Hornshole
Author: Anonymous
Genre: Traditional
Plot Summary: After the disastrous Battle of Flodden in 1513, most Borders towns lacked menfolk of fighting age. The whole area was defenceless against marauding English troops. However when a raiding party attacked Hawick, driving away the inhabitants, a group of youths took it upon themselves to avenge their fathers. One night, they gathered what horses they could and stampeded them into the camp of the sleeping English at Hornshole (part of Hawick). Shouting their traditional war cry of 'Teribus!' the young 'callants' followed their horses into the carnage, cutting the throats of their bemused enemies and capturing the English banner. A statue in the town centre commemorates these glorious events, as does a song sung each year at the town's Common Riding.
