Plot Summary: The name of Wedale, an area near Stow on Gala Water, is supposed to derive from ‘Vale of Woe’. The original name related to King Arthur’s victory (his eighth) here over the local pagans. The chapel at Torsance is reputed to have been built around a relic of the True Cross which Arthur brought back from the Holy Land. Arthur and the knights of the Round Table sleep under the Eildon Hills, as do their horses. Beside them is a horn on which are inscribed the words: ‘When thy land is in peril, blow on me, but woe to him that blows without need.’ There are various tales about those who are either tricked into blowing or simply cannot resist the temptation.
