Location: Fast Castle

Town: Eyemouth

Information: Coastal fortress on a promontory overlooking the North Sea. In its prime the castle would have consisted of a courtyard and keep built on a narrow sloping plateau. Cliffs up to 45m high on either side rendered the castle relatively impregnable. The plateau was surrounded by a curtain wall with towers, with the keep at the northern extremity of the peninsula. The castle could only be reached by a drawbridge over a narrow ravine, protected by a barbican. Little remains today of the keep or the courtyard walls except foundations.

Occuped by the English in the mid 14th century, taken back by a force led by Patrick Dunbar in 1410. Later in the hands of the Home family, allies of King James IV of Scotland, during which time Fast Castle played host to Margaret Tudor on her way to marry James IV. Captured again by Henry VIII during his 'rough wooing' but back in the hands of the scots again by the time Mary Queen of Scots stayed there.
