Location: Eildon Hills
Town: Melrose

Information: The Eildon Hills lie just outside Melrose and overlook the town. Excavations have found that the Eildons provided a hill fort in the Bronze ages. In 1 AD the Romans built a huge fort at Trimontium, so called because of the three peaks of the Eildons, at the foot of the Eildons by the Tweed. Eildon is said to be a "hollow hill", and is mentioned in the legend of Thomas the Rhymer. Some believe Thomas went under the hill itself, and certainly part of the ballad occurs in the vicinity.
The volcanic rock was supposedly split in three by the wizard Michael Scot "when he was out of employment".
