Name: John Wilson (Christopher North)
From: 1785
To: 1854
Biography: Educated at Glasgow and Oxford universities, in 1820 Wilson was appointed Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh – more for his Tory principles than for his morality or skills as a philosopher. A poet, essayist and literary critic, he is best remembered as the author of the majority of the ‘Noctes Ambrosianae’ in Blackwood’s Magazine (see below); as an early admirer of Wordsworth’s poetry; as a man of letters; and as a bon vivant friend of Romantic poets, and Hogg (q.v.) and Scott (q.v.) with whom he would socialise on epic drinking sprees in the Borders.
