Name: Elizabeth Dodd (Lavinia Derwent)
From: 1909
To: 1989
Biography: Already well-known for her children’s books, Derwent found further popularity with memories of infancy and adulthood in Berwickshire, where at one stage she kept house for her brother, a Church of Scotland Minister. Whether she is entertaining the Brethren of the local kirk, supporting “Wee Wullie” and his sister “Oor Net” or placating the local mad major, Lavinia kept both her head and her sense of humour, at least according to the cover jacket blurb. Wry and gentle accounts reminiscent of James Herriot, only with fewer animals and Yorkshiremen.
