Name: Dorothy Dunnett

Biography: Dunfermline born, Edinburgh-educated portrait painter and leading exponent of historical romance. Renowned for their historical detail, the six books in Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles are set partially in the Scottish Borders and Lothians of the 16th century, narrating the political, military and personal upheavals of the period.

Francis Crawford of Lymond is Dunnett's local hero, an attractive blend of scholar, ne'er-do-well, poet, and battle-hardended mercenary.

Elspeth Morrison's The Dorothy Dunnett Companion (1994), gives an A-Z listing of characters, settings and background to Dunnett's Lymond series. Republished in 2001 in US by Vintage, in UK by Penguin. Volume 2 of the Companion, dealing with additional Niccolo stories published in UK by Michael Joseph.
